I am told that one must get used to rejection in the business of writing. Wonderful. I guess I’ll just go and quietly slit my wrists. (Just kidding of course…put that phone down!) The discipline of writing is just as important to me as that of getting out and walking. Both mind and body get fresh air. Just the same, sharing my writing sometimes feels like getting undressed in a room full of viewers that can’t decide which part of my body needs the most reconstructive surgery. I suppose that the greatest human craving is not for chocolate, money, or sex- but for absolute editorial power. It is no wonder that teaching English, or creative writing, or literary criticism is such an intoxicating profession (well…maybe not in the early high school years). Who was it that said “the pen is mightier than the sword”?
