Tonight the vast majority of people with children will observe the rite of traypsing from door to door, pillowcases in hand, be-costumed as angels, ballerinas, ghosts, dragons, fruitbowls, and other miscellaneous disguises- with the purpose of amassing kilos of candy and other tooth-rotting substances. It is also a good excuse to play with matches and blow things up (hopefully without damage to the living). What is the significance of salt water taffy in the mystical unravelings of the cosmos? Is Halloween a Christian incarnation of Purim- another festival where the wearing of costumes is prominent?
